Jonathan Slotter
Prior to founding Slotter Law, PLLC, Jonathan was an associate attorney at the Cochell Law Firm, where he handled complex commercial litigation and corporate transactional matters. During his time at the Cochell Law Firm, Jonathan gained significant experience representing businesses in a wide array of legal disputes, including contract disputes, business torts, deceptive trade practices (DTPA) claims, fraud, intellectual property, and labor and employment matters. The Cochell Law Firm focuses on both commercial litigation and corporate transactional work, assisting clients with corporate governance, contracts, mergers and acquisitions, and resolving major business disputes.

Litigation Experience
Jonathan’s litigation experience includes defending businesses and prosecuting claims in areas such as breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, and trade secrets.
He has represented companies involved in high-stakes litigation and has successfully defended against claims involving millions of dollars in potential damages. His work also extends into transactional law, where he has handled mergers and acquisitions, asset sales, and corporate structuring for businesses of all sizes, including companies generating tens of millions of dollars in revenue annually.
In addition to his hands-on experience with complex cases, Jonathan excels in providing strategic legal guidance to businesses at every stage of their development. He works closely with his clients to resolve disputes cost-effectively, whether through early settlement or litigation, and is known for his pragmatic, creative problem-solving approach that prioritizes his clients’ interests.
Jonathan earned his law degree from the SMU Dedman School of Law in 2015, where he served as a Notes Editor for the SMU Science and Technology Law Review. During law school, he clerked for the Honorable Kristin Wade in the Dallas Criminal Court of Appeals, interned with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, and worked with the Dallas City Attorney’s Office, Environmental Compliance Division.
Before law school, Jonathan graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was Vice President of the Model United Nations club, Secretary of the American Indian Student Union, and a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. He also interned for a U.S. Congressman, gaining early experience in governmental affairs and leadership.
Born and raised in Crosby, Texas, Jonathan graduated from Crosby High School, where he won the UIL State Championship in cross-examination debate and placed 10th at the National Forensics League national debate tournament.
Notable Cases & Court Admissions
- Kathryn and Jeff Duke v. American Western Steel, District Court, Brazoria County, Texas (Case No. 76004-CV, Nov. 13, 2018): Jonathan successfully defended American Western Steel against claims of fraud, DTPA violations, and RCLA violations, where the plaintiffs sought $1 million in damages. The jury awarded American Western Steel more than $200,000 in damages plus $100,000 in punitive damages for successful counterclaims of breach of contract and fraud.
- FTC v. Credit Bureau Ctr., LLC, 937 F.3d 764 (7th Cir. 2019): Jonathan played a key role in a 7th Circuit case that vacated significant damages and overruled the long-standing precedent set by FTC v. Amy Travel Service, Inc. The court ruled that Section 13(b) of the FTC Act did not authorize restitution as a remedy.
- FTC v. VPL Med., Inc., 846 F. App’x 561 (9th Cir. 2021): 9th Circuit vacated a temporary injunction holding VPL Medical within a court ordered receivership because the FTC could not hold an unrelated company in a receivership to preserve assets for a judgment in which it could not obtain equitable monetary relief, the sole monetary relief it was requesting.
- Maintenance of Way Equipment Services, LLC v. Marcus Mukoro, Fort Bend County Court at Law (Case No. 20-ccv-067235, Nov. 2, 2022): Jonathan successfully removed a partner and had their ownership interest forfeited after proving a breach of fiduciary duty, including the misuse of company funds and the diversion of business opportunities to a competing business.
